Virtual Skills Testing

American Heart Association® (AHA)

Upon completion of the American Heart Association® Heartcode™ online course & Virtual Skills Testing, you will receive an American Heart Association® ecard.

To minimize the risk of COVID-19 transmission during AHA courses, the AHA will temporarily allow Training Centers to conduct virtual training for cognitive learning and/or hands-on skills under the requirements described below. Virtual training methods may be used until social distancing guidelines for reducing the transmission of COVID-19 outbreak are no longer in effect.

Two options for AHA Virtual Testing (VST & VRT)

Option 1: Virtual Skills Testing (VST):

  • Can be used for renewals or first time attendees.
  • Successfully complete the American Heart Association® Heartcode online course (purchased separately).
  • Successfully complete the appropriate skills testing during a Virtual Skills Testing (VST) Session, with an AHA Instructor.

Option 2: Virtual Renewal Testing (VRT):

  • You must have a current or recently expired (3 months) AHA card.
  • Watch all the AHA videos on our monitored, password protected page.
  • Complete the AHA online written test on our monitored, password protected page, with a score of 84%.
  • Successfully complete the appropriate skills testing during a Virtual Renewal Testing (VRT) Session, with an AHA Instructor.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Virtual Skill Testing (VST) requires that you complete the AHA Heartcode® online course and then pass the skills testing during a virtual session with an AHA instructor. You can view the checklists on the VST page. See the skills checklists below.
  • Virtual Renewal Testing (VRT) requires that you have a current or recently expired (3 months) AHA card, watch all of the AHA videos on our monitored, password protected site, take an online written exam and then pass the required skills testing during a virtual session, with an AHA instructor.. You can view the skills checklists on the VRT page.
  • You will not be asked to provide mouth to mouth or mouth to mask ventilations during your skills testing. You will be asked to show that you know the technique.
  • All equipment is cleaned in excess of AHA guidelines and packed for shipping with extreme care intended to maintain cleanliness. Although not necessary, equipment may be further cleaned by recipient if desired.
  1. Successful Completion of all cases in the American Heart Association Heartcode ACLS online course.
  2. Achieving a score of 84% or better on the online exam.
  3. A skills testing package with be shipped to you with the required equipment.
  4. Active participation, and completion of all learning stations during your Virtual Skills Testing.

  5. Optional: Megacode testing is optional. For Megacode testing, at least three students should be present for each case scenario. This is NOT recommended at this time due to strict social distancing guidelines currently in effect. You will not be asked to participate in a Megacode scenario.
  1. Successful Completion of all cases in the American Heart Association Heartcode PALS online course.
  2. Achieving a score of 84% or better on the online exam.
  3. A skills testing package with be shipped to you with the required equipment.
  4. Successful completion of the required BLS skills during your Virtual Skills Test.
    1. Infant CPR
    2. Child CPR
  5. Active participation, and completion of all learning stations during your Virtual Skills Testing.
    1. Airway Management
    2. Rhythm Disturbances
    3. Vascular Access
  6. Optional: Successful completion of 1 PALS case scenario test per student is encourage but not required.
    1. Case scenario testing is optional. For case scenario testing, at least three students should be present for each case scenario. This is NOT recommended at this time due to strict social distancing guidelines currently in effect. You will not be asked to participate in a case scenario.
  1. Successful completion of the American Heart Association Heartcode BLS online course.
  2. A skills testing package with be shipped to you with the required equipment.
  3. You will be asked to demonstrate High Quality CPR during your Virtual Skills Testing.

  • If you are doing BLS only, probably around 15-20 minutes.
  • If you are doing ACLS only, probably 20-30 minutes.
  • If you are doing PALS only, probably 30-40 minutes.
  • If you add BLS to either ACLS or PALS, add about 10 minutes. 
  • This may be different for varying levels of experience & knowledge. If you are prepared and ready to go, it will probably be a shorter time.
  1. Download the Zoom App on the device your will be using during your Virtual Skills Testing.
  2. On the date & time of your appointment, you will receive an email with a link to join the meeting.
  3. Click on the link in the email and you will be joined to the Zoom Meeting.
  4. At the bottom of the page is the Zoom Cloud Meetings instructional video on how to access the Zoom meeting on the day of your appointment.
